Finding Peace in the Chaos

To put it mildly, we are living in uncertain times. Listening to the news and social media can be nerve wracking. If you are like me, you are outraged at the bombing of Gaza, the war on Ukraine, and the conflict in Myanmar and Sub Saharan Africa. If you are like me, you are extremely concerned about the chaos in this country.

The issue is, how can our nervous systems deal with the overload of clashing, distressing stimuli? I don’t believe our bodies were designed to handle the ongoing, contentious energy being thrown at us. So how can we protect ourselves from melting into a puddle of vibrating goo?

I find comfort and pleasure in working in my garden, turning the dirt, and watching my vegetables and flowers grow. Dirt has a natural tranquilizer (mycobacterium vaccae) in it that activates serotonin, the happy brain chemical. Perhaps you have no yard. House plants are a nice alternative.

In the same vein, I feel happy when I walk in a park and especially in the woods. I get still and watch the birds, the lizards, and even the insects. They are all doing their thing.

I work to stay mindful of practicing non-judgment of others. This is an ongoing practice for me. When an unkind judgment arises, I ask myself what happened to that person to make them act out or be unkind or be super loud, or whatever. Then, I silently bless them.

I have a couple of bird feeders, and watching “my” birds is so pleasant. I put out a special feeder for the blue jays with peanuts daily, and watch a jay grab up a whole, unshelled peanut in her beak, then take it to a branch where she cheerful dismantles the shell and swallows the peanut whole. If I put out regular feed, and forget the peanuts, the jays scream loudly until I remember! Birds can be hilarious, almost like a Peyton Place.
I do some self-care. Warm bath, essential oils on my wrists at bedtime, laying on a biomat, breath-work (such as inhaling to the count of 7, holding to the count of 7, exhaling to the count of 7, holding to the count of 7, repeating). Meditation. Regular chiropractic. Reading.

I try to say focused on today. Looking into the future brings up uncertainty and anxiety, particularly now. My mind is a squirrelly thing, and must be tamed on a regular basis.

I love giving a genuine compliment to others. It makes them smile, and in turn I feel good about myself that I’ve noticed them and made them feel good. I believe we must work toward invoking peace that honors our nervous system to keep us healthy and fully functional. If you have something special you do for yourself, let me hear about it! Email me!

Earth is a spiritual PhD. Earth is a tough school.
It is a master’s graduating class. You are getting
your PhDs as souls. The challenges are going to
be equivalent to the level of the power of your souls.
