A Wall of Chaos

A couple of weeks ago, I returned from a trip to Ireland. Ireland is a spiritual home for me, and I feel a “rightness in my body” when I am there.  Ireland has an intriguing mythology, and a huge variety of stone sites – circles, dolmans, ring forts and burial sights that are thousands of years old with no information on them but brimming with energy. There are also ogham stones, Pictish writing, that are now being decoded.

While these fascinate me, and I certainly spend a large portion of my time searching them out, the people are what capture my heart. They are so openhearted and generous with their time and knowledge. They will go out of their way to help.

For instance, at one Air BnB, when the host knew we were looking for ancient sacred sites, he got into the car with us and directed us to two little-known sites tucked away that we would have never found on our own. We took him to dinner, and then he directed us to a pub where they sing trad (traditional) music – my favorite. And what a fun evening that was!

When I returned home, I was hit by a wall of collective chaos, anger and disappointment that is currently plaguing the country. The jet lag left me feeling disoriented and without a lot of psychic protection from the current energies. When I stopped to check into my body, I noticed that my stomach felt uneasy, and my inhalation was short. I began to draw up against the discord.

I needed a plan to re-engage in my world in a meaningful way. First, I went to my garden. But it was somewhat burned up and struggling with the summer heat. I turned to my kitties, but they were very needy and not particularly calm. Writing in my journal was helpful.

Then, I found one of my favorite CDs – an Enya recording – and sat to listen to that. The soothing music took me into a prayerful mood, and I began to have a conversation with my personal guides, assigned to me from birth.  I asked for assistance with a clear mind and peace in my heart. They reminded me of my most simple tool for clearing: Tapping.

Next, I began to do EFT. While tapping works on specific problems, it also serves to calm the nervous system. I tapped for making myself more comfortable in this jazzed-up energy and I tapped on finding peace of mind. It worked, and I am happy to say I’m back to feeling passionate about my work again.

If you aren’t tapping as a part of your personal growth assistance, I would like to remind you that it is there for you, free and clear. On my website www.CompassionateClearing.com I have a whole section on tapping including 11 articles: Where the points are and how you proceed. I also have a variety of protocols for various issues you might encounter. I encourage you to take a look. Strengthen yourself against the hate mongering and the upset of the population around you.

If you are not familiar with EFT tapping, please go to Emotional Freedom Technique Instructions to learn the basics. To begin, it is useful to get a number and write it down regarding how strongly you feel about the issue you are tapping on. Use the scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest distress.

Side of hand: Even though I don’t feel good about myself right now, I’m going to love and accept myself anyway.

Side of hand: Even though I feel stress in my body when I don’t like myself, I forgive and honor myself.

Side of hand: Even though I don’t feel comfortable with myself, I’m willing to let some of it go now with ease and joy.

Inner Eye:  I don’t like myself.

Outer Eye: I don’t think anybody else does, either.

Under eye:  I haven’t got anything in particular to like about myself.

Under nose: I make the wrong choices and everybody knows

Under bottom lip: And it’s depressing.

Clavicles: It feels unsafe.

Under Arm: I have a low level anxiety all the time.

Top of head: I always seem to say that wrong thing

Take a breath and have a sip of water, then continue:

IE:  I don’t have the confidence I need

OE:  It is so icky feeling this way.

UE:  It’s so painful

UN: So many beliefs about worthlessness.

UL: Sometimes, I just hate myself

C:  I don’t like the way I look.

UA: I have no self-confidence

TH: Sometimes, I even feel dread being around others.

Check your number. Has it gone down? Write the new number down.

Continue your rounds, using phrases that apply to you until your body begins to relax a bit. When your number has gone down, and you are less stressed and ready to bring in some peace, finish up with these three rounds.

Side of Hand: Even though I worry too much what others think, I completely love and accept myself
S of H: Even though I don’t give myself a break, I forgive and honor myself
S of H: Even though I’m really hard on myself, I’m ready to start loving myself now.

IE:  It’s hard always worrying what others think

OE: I am tired of beating myself up

UE: I want to be able to relax

UN: I wish to stop being defensive

UL: It’s important to me to feel accepted

C:  To not need other people’s approval so much

UA: Free to relax a bit

TH: Free to stop second-guessing myself

IE: Taking a deep breath in and exhaling.

OE: Can I move toward some peace?

UE: Is there a way to feel a little bit safer?

UN: Can I find a way to let some of this go?

UL: Can I relax a bit?

C:  Yes, I know I can

UA: It’s already better

TH: My body is relaxing some

IE: Just letting some of this disapproval go

OE: Tapping will help

UE: I’m feeling more in harmony

UN: Being able to breathe

UL: Taking a deep breath

C: Letting some of this go.

UA: Finding some calm

TH: Allowing relaxation into my body.

Now, check into your body. What number do you have on the number of 1-10? It is likely to go down even more over the next day or so.

  • Can you move your number even a little bit down in order to self soothe? Sure. Just keep tapping and adding things to tap on that bother you about your lack of self confidence.
  • Can the low self esteem return? Yes. You can say to yourself “Ah, I recognize this old pattern. I’m glad I caught it this time.”

Are You Habituated to Overwhelm?

Many of us in the US are functioning constantly with a feeling of overwhelm. I witness it in clients in my practice.  I observe it in faces at the grocery store. I hear it in conversations with my friends. I feel it, myself. Nightly news and social media tells us in so many ways that the world is “going to hell in a hand basket.”

We are already holding a high level of stress. When one more thing happens such as an alarming news story, even small, that stress can shoot up. An upset with a partner can drive it up further. Our already-tired adrenals move into action.

These issues may interfere with our ability to sleep soundly. Our moods can fluctuate. We may feel confused or angry or sad without having a specific reason to which we can point. We may find ourselves self-medicating with food, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and/or drugs to mask the pain.

We become habituated to overwhelm. We may cease to recognize it. This causes us to accept the high levels of stress our bodies are valiantly trying to cope with. The resultant struggle causes our bodies to begin to break down in a variety of ways. Think of heart, lungs, liver, gall bladder, stomach, and intestines issues.

What triggers you? Don’t know? Become a self-reflective detective. Observe what activates your stress response. Think of news that brings anger or fear or anxiety up in you. For me, there are many things. Reading of social injustice on Facebook tends to create angry little shock waves in me. Hearing about hostile acts around the world and in my city raises my blood pressure. Watching the political circus shoots steam out my ears.

A couple of the ways to manage your stress is through yoga and meditation. A good one is to come in and clear your stuff with me. But, really, you have the ability to bring your stress down in the moment of impact with tapping. i.e. “Even though this really upsets me…”

“Oh,” but you say, “I can’t do that at the office when my co-worker is spitting out offensive political statements.”

Yes, you can. You can step down the hall to the bathroom. Or, you can just tap on the side of your hand under your desk. You can rub the inner wrist point (a secondary point we don’t use too often, but is effective, nevertheless). You can repeat the statements to yourself. While silent statements aren’t as powerful, they still work. Then, when you get home, you can tap a couple of rounds.

Don’t stuff your overwhelm. You are too valuable. I’ve written two tapping protocols to help you reduce stress and overwhelm. As usual, you can change the statements to more closely fit your situation.  To access two overwhelm scripts, go here.

As usual, if you’d like help, I would be happy to work with you.
