Telephone of the Wind

Last year, I read a wonderful article about a man who had placed a rotary phone on a tree in Olympia (Washington) Park along a hiking trail. A notice was posted by it encouraging hikers to share their grief into the phone (that wasn’t connected). The goal was to say the unsaid things to those loved ones who had passed. The big surprise is that there was often a line of people using that phone. Fascinating. There’s no one on the other end of the phone, the line is dead, and yet folks seemed to be getting relief from their sorrow.

What is happening there? It seems that just speaking their troubles out loud took the issue outside of their head where it might have been spinning in a never-ending loop, and made it more concrete. Stating their pain became more manageable through employing the prop of the phone. Of course, the same could happen in talking to a friend or a therapist. Yet, sometimes no one’s available to listen.

I know it’s hot, but have you considered heading to a park or forest to talk to the trees? Maybe you are grieving the loss of a loved one, but maybe you just need to get something off your chest. I recommend this simple technique to go out into nature and either take your own phone or just tell your worries to a tree, who, I promise, won’t try to “fix” you, talk you out of your fears, or dismiss your concerns. Oh – be sure to bring the bug spray.

Most of us expected that, by springtime this year, everything would return to “normal” – whatever normal is. But it has not and will not. No more business-as-usual as we can never return. Many of us find, through this time of the pandemic, that we are changing in ways both subtle and obvious. Take a look at what Carolyn Myss has to say about that:

“You are not imagining that you are more sensitive to the world around you, more inclined to need quiet time, more attuned to the emotions of others, more perceptive about the difference between what you see and what you sense. You, along with all the rest of us, are transitioning to a more expansive level of awareness in which your inner sight is becoming dominant over what you physically hear and see. So there is a reason we feel change in the air. There is a reason we are alive now. It is an exciting and advantageous time to begin (or accelerate) consciously healing your body, mind and soul,and expressing your creative power if you haven’t already.

What are your fears? What thoughts stimulate guilt? What are the uncomfortable stories that show up over and over again in your life? What life choices have you made that turned out to be difficult to navigate? These are the questions that, in my opinion, can be more easily addressed, forgiven and released at this time.

The Universe (Goddess, God, Divine Mind) is handing us a precious gift of the ability to more easily open doors for a new, expansive reality for ourselves. Some of that transformation is already happening without our consciously working on it. However, the delicious possibility is available to make a huge cosmic leap in consciousness right now.

What will you do? Will you let this time pass you by?

  1. Meditate daily.
  2. Do regular yoga or take quiet walks.
  3. Do breath work – much is written online if you are unfamiliar with the concept.
  4. Make it a habit to listen to your thoughts and self talk, and practice compassion with yourself and others.
  5. Acupuncture can stimulate emotional, psychic, and spiritual healing as well as physical healing.
  6. Spend time alone in nature often. Take your journal with you to write down any significant thoughts.
  7. Study some of the great spiritual teachers such as Marianne Williamson, Carolyn Myss, Don Miguel Ruiz, Joseph Murphy, and Teresa of Avila (her work is still relevant 5 centuries later).
  8. Journal your thoughts and dreams. Much can bubble to the top during writing.

  10. Pray for help, and then take time to listen for the answers.

I’m glad to see the backside of 2020, and I imagine you are, too. It’s time to look back with gratitude on the spiritual/emotional transformation we have attained, and then look forward to the new year and anticipate the transformation in consciousness it can bring.

Last year seemed to engender a lot of desires for internal change, manifested externally in our surroundings and, possibly in our bodies. My guess is that you may have begun to think in terms of changes to your living space. I’ve got some useful suggestions for you.

New Energy for your Home

(Three ideas)

  1. Salt bowls
    Some people resist saging their homes due to the smoke involved. That’s okay, because you can clear stagnant energy with salt. Any kind of salt will do, but commercial salt like Morton’s has been chemically altered. I only use that to wash my clothes. I would suggest some good, clean salt. Pour it into a bowl and set it out where it won’t get knocked over. You may add some juniper/cedar berries or tiny branches, washed clean of pollen, to the salt or some essential oils (conifers are good – cedar, fir, spruce). It’s kind of like adding baking soda to your fridge to clean up odors. Stir it from time to time and when you sense that it is spent, pour it out in the trash or somewhere like cracks in the driveway to prevent weeds,
  2. Painting
    If you have decided to paint a wall or two, try this. Prior to painting, paint or pencil in the attributes on the wall that you want in the house. i.e. love, laughter, kindness, prosperity, good will to all, peace, nurturing, sweet kisses, etc. Do it with intention. Then, paint over it in the usual manner. Words have power, and though you will no longer see them, they will still exude that power. Also, order low VOC paint, that will do less toxic outgassing. It’s more expensive, but you health is worth it.
  3. Furniture and Objects:
    The artwork, furniture, and mementos in your home all hold energy, good or not so good. Are there any you’re keeping out of guilt or obligation? Place your hand on the ones you’re not sure about, and tune in to how your body feels. If you feel good, keep it. If your energy plummets, let it go.
